Chapter 3 - The Giver

Jonas’s father brought a baby called Gabriel as he was concerned Gabriel would be released due to his slow development. Gab has the same pale eyes as Jonas’s while almost every community members have darker eyes. However, Jonas does not seem to have been interested in Gab. He was just sitting on the desk and thinking about an incident having mystified him instead of hovering over the baby.

When I met the word, Birthmother for the first time during my reading, I thought the assignment, Birthmother would be the most miserable. Until die, ones have to just give a birth?! In fact, it couldn’t be more terrible to deliver babies for just 3 years, be unable to see own babies and spend the rest of life doing physical labor. In Jonas’s world which is completely controlled and well designed, all occupations do not seem to be equally honorable as the real world is so.

In addition, I think there is no animal except for food in the community. It's because Jonas’s little sister, Lily said that Hippo is a strange word. I don’t think Lily is too young to learn the word, Hippo. It's really basic H word following “Horse” to learn Alphabet. I guess in this story, there would not be any animals, even dogs.

The material which made me so curious was APPLE. During catch play, the apple looked different in the air for Jonas but his playmate, Asher couldn’t tell any difference. In the beginning of chapter 3, it mentioned Jonas’s eyes are different from others in color. Maybe these factors are related each other. Jonas might have the particular eyes to see special things and it could affect his future assignment? maybe? let’s see~!

  1. Mrs. Analyzer!Different colour eyes related to the people's different thinking way?! WOW~ That's tremendous idea:O About your "No-animal" opinion, you just guess from Lily's talk that she doesn't know about Hippopotamus? How keen woman, you are...hmmm About "Birthmother", I imagined an awful baby factory, but it wasn't. It sounds a peaceful yet strange world, doesn't it? This book keep stirring our imagination even if we have thousands of new words. Now I feel the Giver was good choice for our reading club:)
