In the family ritual, Jonas confessed his apprehensive feeling how Jonas and his close friend Asher will be after the Ceremony. “The Ceremony of Twelve” in the community means being noticed your future occupation which they normally call “Assignment”. Jonas’ parents reassured him that it’s not necessary to worry from their experience and trust in the Elders. There is specialist called ”the Elders” who observe the children to decide their Assignment. And, the highest Elder positioned people called “the Receiver”. In the community, formally each family seems to be given children, also their name were named by the community.

<Impressions>
After I read once, I didn’t get the story, but read twice,
then I was fascinated. During my reading, I felt 2 things. One is that l wish I
could go back to 12 years old in this story to receive the assignment. If the
Elders have reliable sight, I’m willing to receive the Assignment. It is
Science Fiction, but such a rational rule is telling us the meaning of freedom
and difficulties for finding the mission in our lives. The other one is the way his parents talk with
their son. I learned how parents can
reassure the children. At the same time, I can see his parents believe community’s
decision without any doubts. It smells
religion….
